How to repair bodywork damage

We all know that our cars are great but, we must remember they are on average 10 years old and accidents do happen so below is a how to on body work repair using a damaged door.

Before you start:

Step 1

Push the dent out as much as you can without damaging the surface that is to be repaired any more.

Remove paint from the damage and surrounding area (about 1" around the damaged area) with coarse abrasiv paper, for example 80 grit Aluminium Oxide

Roughen the bare metal with coarse abrasive paper or wire brush. Wipe away any loose particales.

Poor a small amount of methylated sprits onto a clean cloth and apply to the area surounding the damage. Use another clean cloth to clear the area of wax and grease before solvent evaporates.

Tip of the trade: Apply the methylotated sprits with one hand and wipe away with the other in a circular motion. Always ensure the methylotated sprits lid is replaced to avoid solvent evaporation.

Step 2

The hole eeds to be bridged in order to prevent water penetrating the repair and causing rust. P40 contains fiber reinforcement, which replicates the strenght of the original surface.

Mix P40 bridging compund and hardener on a clean surface (not cardboard, an old plate is best for this) for aproximatly 1-2 minutes or untill a uniform colour is achieved. For best result mix 97 parts P40 to 3 parts harnener, that is like a golfball to a pea.

Apply the P40 to the damaged and surrounding preped area with the supplyed applicator and leve for at least 30 minutes, one hour is beter.

Tip of the trade: P40 is only useable until it begins to stiffen, usually after about 5-10 minutes

Step 3

Mix P38 and harnener togeather on a clean surface (not cardboard, an old plate is best for this). For best result mix 97 parts P40 to 3 parts harnener, that is like a golfball to a pea.

Use a folding action to prevent adding too much air, any air bubbles can cause "pin holes" in the repair.

It should be applied directly over the P40 and left for aproximatly 30 minutes (an hour is better).

Apply he paste so that the final surface is slightly proud of the level required. One layermay be enough if not allow the paste to hardenbefore adding another layer

Tip of the trade: Apply body filler slowly and smoothly to create a surface which is easy to sand.

Step 4

Sand the area with a course wet and dry paper (120 or 240 grit) to create a nice smooth finish ready for painting.

Tip of the trade: Use a block for effectiv sanding. This will enable a flat even surface to be obtained.
